PYT NEWS!

Quick update for you all. Long time no speak and all that, Team PYT have had to switch focus to finishing up a load of deadlines and going to see amazing bands at ATPavement. We are ready to go again now though!

First up, thank you SO SO MUCH to everyone who was involved with Sounds From The Other City. Anyone who came down to the Postcards From Manchester stage will know that it was packed all day long, and we were treated to really special performances from all the bands. My personal highlights were Windmill playing ‘Start a War’ by The National, seeing the waves of confusion and excitement when Islet started playing ‘Jasmine’ and bounding around the room, and obviously the madness that ensued once The Rural Alberta Advantage started. It was taking three of us to hold the speakers up during The RAA because you lot were enjoying it so much. That we then went on to drink the bar dry during the disco after which included pub long jumps and limbo dancing just topped it all off! There have been some ace reviews of the day in the NME, Pigeon Post, Artrocker. Here is a little taste of the day…

So, moving on from that. PYT news.

Number one, the bad news. Due to all of the other work we’ve had on, the new issue of the PYT zine is going to be a wee bit late. Rather than coming out at this week’s PYT at Common (Wednesday night, 8 till midnight, fun fun fun!) The new zine is looking ace, so will be worth the wait. It’ll be out at the start of June rather than the end of May – sorry folks.

ONTO THE FUN STUFF!

This week isn’t just a PYT on a Wednesday week, it is also a return to PYT putting gigs on week! We have got some ace ace bands coming to play, and we are dead excited! SO, Thursday =

Pull Yourself Together presents…

Foxes! – ‘the first attempt in musical history to wrangle winsome C86 indie with prog rock’ Alexis Petridis, The Guardian

Saki Bar (Upstairs)
Wilmslow Road, Rusholme
Thursday 27th May
8pm – £5 / £4 with an animal t-shirt!

To celebrate the Bank Holiday we are heading over to Eurocultured where the lovely folks from Red Deer Club are hosting the Arch stage, and have asked us to come along and play some songs in between the ace bands they’ve got playing, including PYT favourites Young British Artists! Again, it’s £5, and that’ll get you into all of the stages all day.

And finally, another gig we are involved in. If you’ve been over to our website in the past couple of months you’ll know that we love both The School and Hexicon. The School play the best 60s tinged girl-pop around – if you’ve not seen them before we can guarantee you’ll fall in love. Hexicon are well worth a watch too, so don’t miss ’em! Friday 4th June: Postcards from Manchester present… The School and Hexicon at Saki Bar

An Indiepop Update

Some great bands have been in touch with us recently looking for shows. Since our rather necessary gig-promoting hiatus began at the end of summer ’09 we hadn’t thought much about putting shows on – with the exception of collaborative affairs like Postcards from Manchester – but we’re now beginning to reconsider. It’s a great shame that the financial instability of live music means we can’t promote shows on a regular basis, but as you may be aware, it’s something we just won’t do if we can’t afford to pay the bands properly.

So whilst we get our heads together over the next couple of months and count the pennies to see when we can start putting bands on again, here are a few of the great people who’ve been in touch with us. We like ’em a lot, and we hope you do too – with any luck you’ll see them on a PYT stage in the coming months!

Red Shoe Diaries

Coming from the same melancholy indie-pop vein that Sweden’s Cats on Fire have perfected so well, Nottingham’s Red Shoe Diaries make toe-tapping, hip-swaying music to swoon to – and they do it in a mighty fine fashion.

Hexicon

Featuring two members of Allo, Darlin’s band, Hexicon are a delight. Gentle, tuneful melodies, handclaps and French Horn pervade their songs, which are, without exception, full of a warm glow that brings a smile to the face. Perfect listening for this new-found Springtime we’ve been experiencing!

The School

If you’ve watched the video for The School‘s Is He Really Coming Home on this very site then you’ll know how good they are with that 60s girl group vibe. They’ve come on leaps and bounds over the past year or so, and their live show is just gorgeous. Good thing then, that whilst we couldn’t put ’em on, the kind folks at Saki could! They play the Rusholme bar on 4th June, along with the aforementioned Hexicon; don’t miss it.

Lucky Delucci

Another Cardiff-based band, but altogether different from The School (despite sharing one member – but then again you don’t have to have found many Cardiff bands to realise that they swap band members on a highly regular basis), PYT first saw Lucky Delucci on a beautiful summer Sunday in Bute Park. Lilting melodies and folk goodness akin to Euros Childs, you should definitely check ’em out.

Moonjellies

Admittedly these guys didn’t get in touch for a show, more for some solidarity. Y’see, Moonjellies are from France. They’re concerned that this isn’t the best location for them considering their indiepop ways, so they started to contact like-minded souls in the UK hearing that they may fair better over here. They certainly should, with their mournful yet glossy pop – we’re hoping that their debut album Inner Anger, Feather gets a UK release soon!

Tracey’s Love

Probably the band that have been in touch at the earliest stage of their development, Tracey’s Love formed from one man’s Belle and Sebastian obsession – far from a bad thing in the eyes of PYT. All lo-fi jangles and considered vocals, we’re interested to see where these guys are heading!

New videos day! Allo Darlin' and The School

From exciting downloads yesterday, today we bring you new music videos from two of our favourite bands.

Allo Darlin’ have long been friends with PYT, and we are delighted that they are getting loads of good radio play and whatnot. Elizabeth and Co’s debut album has barely left our stereo in the last week, so it was lovely to spot this video for new single Dreaming. It also helps that it was shot by Nik from Moustache of Insanity, another ace indiepop act.

Another band with a great album coming out soon are The School, whose new long player is being released by Elefant Records. This video for new single Is He Really Coming Home? is lovely, and has a great 60s look to it. Dead good fun.
